Pennsylvania schools can now be reimbursed for dual-enrolled students

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM)-- In very partisan times, a bipartisan victory in Harrisburg and students are the big winners, proponents say.

Governor Shapiro signed House Bill 1258 into law. It was sponsored by Philadelphia Democrat Stephen Kinsey and Westmoreland County Republican Jill Cooper.

It takes away the penalty for schools that allow their students to dual enroll in local colleges. In the past, districts could not claim and be reimbursed for the student who was also enrolled in a college, thus discouraging the practice.

The bill removes that barrier and encourages high school students to get some college under their belts.

"You have young learners becoming young earners quicker," Cooper said. "They get into the workforce faster, which, you know, here in Pennsylvania is a need that we need."

The effort was truly bipartisan and nearly unanimous in both House and Senate.
