(WHTM) - There's a growing demographic that feels mostly overlooked by politicians and they could impact this year's elections. The Latino now has a warning for both parties; ignore our issues and we'll ignore you at the ballot box.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has taken notice, using an all-Spanish press release to announce a rent rebate program and for the first time, all-Spanish application forms.
"So more Pennsylvanians can access the relief they're entitled to, especially in communities like these, where Latinos make up more than 15% of the population," said Shapiro.
"Hispanic voters are sending a wake-up call to both parties," says Clarissa Martinez Decastro, Vice President of the Latino Vote Initiative. She says Hispanics are 7% of the electorate in a state where Joe Biden won by 1%.
"So no candidate should be resting on their laurels," she says. "They need to make sure that they're out there and that voters understand their positions, their accomplishments, and that they're engaging with those voters effectively."
New polling suggests two-thirds of Latinos favor Democrats, but by a large margin they're most concerned bout inflation, jobs, and the economy. That could bode better for Republicans.
"What Hispanic voters are saying is candidate matter, their position matter, and meaningful outreach is essential," said Martinez Decastro.
So will Latino voters favor Republicans or Democrats come November?
"Whatever party is able to effectively communicate the needs and wants of the Latino community, whether that's Democrat or Republican, you know, that will be the party that will win elections throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania," says State Representative Manny Guzman (D-Berks).
Guzman says Democrats are doing better at meeting Hispanic's needs, but there's still more to be done.
"We have a hill to climb in terms of our engagement as well. So TBD to be determined in terms of which party is able to tap into this vast and growing community."
