PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WHTM) -- Pennsylvania is full of mountains and hills. Pennsylvania is also full of streets and highways. So what happens when a street is built on the side of a hill? You get one of the steepest streets in the United States.
Canton Avenue in the Beechview Neighborhood of Pittsburgh is one of the world's steepest streets. Uncoveringpa.com said that the street is only 600 feet long and has a grade of 30%. However the street also has a 21-foot section where the grade increases to 37%.
The street runs one block from Coast Avenue to Hampshire Avenue. Uncovering PA stated that traffic can only go one way up the hill, which you would do by entering from Coast Avenue.
Additionally, this hill is part of the city's Dirty Dozen bicycle competition that is held. The event features a 50-mile course that features 13 of the steepest hills in the Pittsburgh Metro area.
The road features pavement and cobblestones, which appear about a third of the way up the steep incline.
The road has also been named the steepest road in the continental United States. However this has been disputed two other roads in the country feature steeper grades, one of which is angled at 45 degrees.
