(WHTM) — A Pennsylvania lawmaker wants K9 officers trained to find fentanyl.
New legislation in the state house would require specialized fentanyl training for K9s. Right now, K9 officers can sniff out a variety of drugs, but fentanyl is not one of them.
"Even though it is a legal drug to be used for pharmaceutical reasons, we, of course, know the abundance of fentanyl that's coming into our country," said State Rep. Mike Armanini, (R-Clearfield/Elk).
In 2023, drug overdoses killed an average of 12 people in Pennsylvania every day, and fentanyl caused 76 percent of those deaths.
