(WHTM) — You might start finding pretty, spotted bugs with brown and red wings more frequently these upcoming weeks, and if you do, squash them!
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture took to Facebook to remind residents that the invasive spotted lanternfly enters adulthood at this time of year, and these bugs are trouble.
The Department of Agriculture says lanternflies produce a black, sooty mold that causes serious damage to plants and the surrounding ecosystem. Additionally, lanternflies lay egg masses containing 30 to 50 bugs each.
The department said a quarantine and treatment order is in place to prevent the insect's spread, but quarantine zones are set to expand if necessary.
People who see these critters outside of the quarantine zone are encouraged to kill the bug before reporting it online.
