PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WHTM) - A Pennsylvania man was sentenced to more than 14 years in prison for possessing deepfake child sexual abuse material of child actors.
The Department of Justice says James Smelko of Pittsburgh was convicted last year of possessing pictures "that digitally superimposed the faces of child actors onto nude bodies and bodies engaged in sex acts."
While pending trial, the Department of Justice says Smelko violated his conditions of pretrial release by accessing inappropriate images on his phone.
Smelko was convicted of one count of possessing child pornography and accessing the internet with the intent to view child pornography.
The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Gwendelynn Bills of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) and Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Mitchell for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
