(WHTM) - With warmer weather around the corner the Pennsylvania Game Commission is advising residents to remove and secure anything that could attract bears.

"Black bears have spent the last several months not eating or drinking and surviving on their fat reserves," said the Game Commission. "It’s time for them to get something to eat!"

There are several things that may attract bears to your yard or home that the Game Commission advises securing or moving.

One of those is bird feeders, as bears have been caught climbing onto or pulling down feeders with seed. The Game Commission says bird feeders should be taken down to prevent curious bears from reaching for them.

A big issue is also trash cans, recycling, and compost bins. The Game Commission advises moving bins indoors to areas such as a closed garage until the morning. You can also purchase bear-resistant containers for trash.

Residents should also feed their pets inside so there aren't leftovers or a scent left behind. If your pet needs to eat outdoors, the Game Commission advises limiting the time food is available and cleaning up any mess.

You should also clean your grill and make sure to clean out any grease left behind.

If you have chickens or other small livestock the Game Commission recommends using electric fences.

"Males are usually the first to emerge from hibernation, followed by subadults, then females with yearlings, and lastly, females with new cubs," says the Game Commission. "Now is the time to make sure your property is free of any bear attractants around your home."
