(WTAJ) -- Pennsylvania has been ranked as one of the most sinful states in America, based on a study done by WalletHub.
In the study, all 50 states were compared against one another across 55 key indicators of "immoral or illicit behavior." The data set ranged from violent crimes per capita to excessive drinking to the share of the population with gambling disorders.
The Commonwealth ranked number nine in the "most sinful states" list. Nevada ranked as number one, with Louisiana, California, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas and Arizona following behind.
The least sinful state was Wyoming, with New Hampshire in 49 and Idaho in 48.
Among the rankings, the study also broke down things that were notable for each state. Pa. was noted as the third state to have the most beauty salons per capita, for example. While this might not seem sinful, this was actually the "vanity" category from the study.
The other categories that states were ranked in were anger and hatred, jealousy, excesses and vices, greed, lust and laziness, which are notably the seven cardinal sins.
The study focused on what makes some states more sinful than others, does it sit in law or culture more? Dr. Kristina Thompson, an assistant professor of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Georgia Southern University, reminds people that the idea of being "sinful" is what she called "normative."
Thompson also highlighted that each state has a different definition of what it means to be sinful or commit sin. If "lawbreaking" in general is sinful, then states with fewer laws prohibiting behavior will end up having fewer "criminals," Thompson added.
