MOUNT CARMEL, Pa. (WBRE/WYOU) — Twenty people were taken to area hospitals after a Saturday morning fire at a nursing home in the coal region.

According to an official on scene, crews were dispatched to the Mount Carmel Senior Living Community in Northumberland County for a multi-alarm fire just before 8:00 a.m.

Authorities say that five first responders, 12 residents, and three staff members were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

The 12 residents have been displaced, and the nursing home is working with other nearby facilities to find the residents temporary housing.

This was due to the size of the building and number of occupants inside the building.

Officials say the entire building was evacuated, and law enforcement was on-scene first performing rescues with staff.

Authorities say the fire was contained to the senior living area of the building, and was put out within an hour.

There is smoke, water, and fire damage contained to the senior living area of the building, according to first responders.

A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
