Harrisburg, Pa. (WHTM) - A new design and timeline for the rebuilding of the Broad Street Market was unveiled Thursday, roughly a year and a half after one of Harrisburg's most historic buildings burst into flames.

The two-story design will connected two buildings with a covered walkway and feature an open pavilion to maximize square footage, according to Harrisburg officials.

"We're trying to kind of go back somewhat to the original routes with a more of a modern look to the new building," Dave Baker, Harrisburg's Director of Facilities and Special Projects said. "We would like to be able to serve as much of the public as possible."

The estimated cost for the entire project is roughly $20 million, Baker said. At least some of it will be made possible through insurance dollars and grants, which will allow the market to be rebuilt in phases.

"We won't let one project slow down another project," Baker said. "Our full focus right now is on the brick building renovation and getting it back in business."

Phase one is expected to be completed by May 2026, nearly three years after the fire. Mayor Wanda Williams was questioned about the lengthy timeline.

"We consistently wanted City Council to approve every phase," Williams said. "They weren't just agreeable to doing that. They are a hindrance to us. If you want to blame anybody, blame them."

City Council President Danielle Bowers said she did not have an update to provide regarding the Broad Street Market.

All of this comes on the heels of heightened tensions between Williams and City Council, mostly over the 2025 budget. Williams vetoed six amendments over pay raises for her staff, including police officers, council tried to take away.

In a letter, council fired back and said the mayor is not willing to work with them.

"That's not true," Williams said. "I have always offered for them to be here. They have not been available."
