(WHTM) -- The governor was asked about the landscape of college football with its transfer portals and NIL money during his press conference in Lancaster County.
He was aware that Penn State's backup quarterback Beau Pribula said he'd be transferring to a different school and was told he couldn't play in Saturday's playoff game. Shapiro said he has real concerns about the money and player movement and suggested college athletics is the "wild west right now" and perhaps, lawmakers should consider fixes.
"What worries me is these colleges and universities aren't homes to student-athletes for several years but rather a season and then they move somewhere else," Shapiro said. "I think we have to examine whether the transfer portal combined with nil and all the unlimited resources that go into it. Is that really the best answer?"
Shapiro concedes it would be best handled at the federal level, not state by state. He also said he likes Penn State's chances this week and next. But doesn't want to jinx the Nittany Lions.
