(WHTM) — Pennsylvania pediatricians are stressing the importance of toy safety during the holiday gifting season.
The holiday season can be busy, and it's easy for basic health and safety practices to fall through the cracks. A doctor at Penn State Health in Hershey says supervising play areas is key, and to always check the labels on the toy packaging to make sure that they're age-appropriate and have passed safety testing.
"If you have a 15-month-old who is going to explore the world through their mouth, so everything goes in their mouth," said Dr. Banku Jairath, a pediatrician at Penn State Children's Hospital. "If you have a toy that's going to break into pieces or like into smaller parts, the child might choke."
The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics says to keep kids away from lights and decorations that can be sharp, hot, or pose choking hazards.
