(WHTM) -- Millions of people in Pennsylvania will see a drop in rates taking place when the new year starts.

After a joint settlement was approved 5-0 by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), FirstEnergy will have its rate changes reduced by 55%, the PUC announced Thursday.

This means that the following average residential customer using 1,000kWh per month will see the changes below:

  • 1.9% for Met-Ed rate district customers,
  • 4.1% for Penelec rate district customers,
  • 4.5% for Penn Power rate district customers, and
  • 6.2% for West Penn Power rate district customers.

Starting Jan. 1, 2025, the changes will take place.

The settlement "limits the overall change in base rates to approximately $225 million annually – a sharp reduction from the utility’s initial request of approximately $502 million per year," according to a news release.

Over 2 million people across Pennsylvania are served by FirstEnergy.

Changes are also made to FirstEnergy's customer assistance program to streamline the process better for customers by simplifying enrollment and now allowing automatic enrollment for LIHEAP recipients.
