(WHTM)-- The Pennsylvania Turnpike is urging drivers to prepare for potential snow starting Friday and continuing through the weekend.
Much of Pennsylvania, including parts of the Midstate, is predicted to experience the first snow of the season this weekend. The PA Turnpike warns drivers to be prepared for quickly changing weather conditions and possible vehicle restrictions.
If speed and vehicle restrictions become necessary, the information will be communicated through changeable message signs along the roadway, social media, and 511PA, according to the turnpike. abc27 will also provide Pennsylvanians with weather updates throughout the weekend.
Although there are no planned restrictions, changes could be issued at any time. The turnpike listed ways drivers can stay safe in unpredictable weather conditions.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather.
- State law requires windows and mirrors to be completely clear to improve visibility. Don't forget to clear the hood, roof and trunk, too.
- Avoid sudden stops and starts.
- Slow down and increase following distance.
- Never use cruise control when driving on snow.
- Never crowd or pass a plow truck.
When driving in the winter, the turnpike encourages drivers always to carry an emergency kit.
As part of our mission and commitment to safety, the PA Turnpike prepares year-round for winter weather to ensure its vehicles and system are ready to support roadway safety during the winter months. More than 600 equipment operators and safety patrol personnel, as well as traffic operators, are ready to provide 24/7 staffing and roadway assistance throughout the winter.
