(WHTM) — A new, unique billboard in Harrisburg is calling for Pennsylvania lawmakers to join nearby states in legalizing recreational marijuana.

The billboard shows Governor Josh Shapiro, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Donald Trump. Created by Responsible Pennsylvania, an association of marijuana advocates who wish to grow it, sell it, or smoke it legally in Keystone State, the goal is to push legalization to the finish line.

"The goal of the billboard is to grab the attention of legislators as they come to Harrisburg," said Responsible PA spokesperson Brittany Crampsie. "They'll be reminded that they are in the minority of states in this region that doesn't allow adult-use cannabis."

There are bipartisan bills in both legislative chambers, however Senate Republican leaders are reluctant to pass them.

"This is something the federal government needs to address in a uniform manner," said PA Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman (R).

During abc27's Attorney General Debate, both candidates Dave Sunday (R) and Eugene DePasquale (D) were split on the issue.

Sunday called for having a voice in public safety be a part of the issue of legalization.

"Some of the worst, most horrific crashes we've seen now more than before are people that are high smoking marijuana, the crash, and kill people," said Sunday.

"I do believe that we should regulate and tax marijuana," said DePasquale. "I cannot foresee a scenario where it is a priority of the state Attorney General to put anyone in prison for small amounts of marijuana."

Proponents say legalization would generate large amounts of money for the state, and they are high on the chances of it passing in Pennsylvania sooner rather than later.

"The adult-use market has moved from a conversation of 'Should we do this?' to 'How exactly should we do this?' I think that's a good sign of progress," Crampsie added.

Pennsylvania's new legislative session begins in January.
