SCRANTON, Pa. (WBRE/WYOU) — Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon to visit the ammunition plant that manufactures vital missiles in its war with Russia.

President Zelenskyy left the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant in Lackawanna County around 4:30 p.m. He was here to thank workers for producing ammo critical to Ukraine's two-year-plus battle with Russia.

Police escorted President Zelenskyy's motorcade down Cedar Avenue and into the ammunition plant just after 3:00 p.m.

The president and Ukraine's ambassador toured the facility for about an hour. His visit was about thanking the plant's workers for their production of 155-millimeter artillery shells made at the factory and used in battle with Russia.

Political leaders including Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator Bob Casey, and Congressman Matt Cartwright joined in on the tour.

The plant recently increased its production by 50% in order to churn out more shells and Cartwright says those efforts are going to continue.

"What we talked about today was ramping up, you know scaling up the production. I couldn't be prouder of northeastern Pennsylvania that he recognizes us as leaders in the American war effort to keep eastern Europe free," Cartwright explained.

Zelenskyy's visit to Scranton comes as Ukraine nears 1,000 days at war with Russia.
