(WHTM)-- A coalition of public service leaders in Pennsylvania is asking the Shapiro administration to provide more tools to prevent opioid deaths.

According to the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), Naloxone, or "Narcan," is currently the only reversal antagonist approved for use in Pennsylvania. Two-thirds of states in the U.S. have expanded to additional FDA-approved agents.

“Pennsylvania’s law enforcement officers see first-hand the devastation opioids are causing in communities across our commonwealth,” Pennsylvania FOP President Joe Regan said. “We cannot delay because new challenges are emerging every day. With the prevalence of fentanyl in our drug supply, we need a state policy that allows for new tools to be accessible to Pennsylvanians."

According to the Office of Drug Surveillance, a Pennsylvanian's life is taken by drug overdose every two hours, and 84.3% of said deaths were opioid overdoses in 2022.

Synthetic Opioids are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18-45, according to a study from Opiant Pharmaceuticals.

The coalition fighting for access to more tools to prevent opioid deaths includes leading members in law enforcement organizations, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, non-profit organizations, and more.

“It’s time for Pennsylvania to give first responders every tool available to save lives when seconds count,” Regan said. “We look forward to working with the Shapiro administration to get this done.”
