Number of political ads could break records, but do they actually work?

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - Political campaigns are poised to spend nearly $11 billion on political advertisements this year — a 20-percent increase from 2020 — according to the ad-tracking company "Adimpact."

"The reason that Pennsylvanians are seeing so many ads overall is absolutely because we're in a battleground state," Dickinson College Political Science Professor Sarah Niebler said.

According to Niebler, candidates and political PACs often foot the bill for the ads, which can be littered with misinformation.

"Political ads are given a lot of leeway because of the First Amendment and freedom of speech," Niebler explained. "It is really hard for the average person to fact-check these claims in advertisements in real-time."

Political scientists agree that such ads also have little impact on the average voter, including Harrisburg resident Karen Brookens.

"I would [vote for] Trump," Brookens said. "He's a businessman. He knows how to handle things and be patient about it."

Regardless of what voters view on television, polls, including FiveThirtyEight, show the race for the White House is remarkably close.
