(WHTM) - Pennsylvania grocery stores are preparing to stock their aisles with canned cocktails and similar products after Governor Josh Shapiro signed legislation expanding access to Ready-to-Drink cocktails.

The law defines a Ready-to-drink cocktail as a drink "composed in part of distilled liquor, combined with other nonalcoholic ingredients, carbonated or still, by whatever name the beverage may be called, premixed and packaged in original containers by the manufacturer, containing not more than sixteen ounces that is not mixed or adulterated on the licensed premises of a licensee."

A Ready-to-drink cocktail will be considered liquor unless the product clearly states otherwise and can not be composed in apart part of wine, malt, or brewed beverages.

The law restricts the sale of Ready-to-drink cocktails to before 11 p.m. and to drinks that have a lower alcohol content than 12.5%. It will go into effect 60 days after being signed, which would be September 15.

According to the Associated Press, there are approximately 12,000 license holders including grocery stores, who could potentially apply for the new Ready-to-Drink cocktail license. Other license holders who may soon have canned cocktails available include bars, beer distributors, restaurants, and convenience stores.

abc27 has reached out to major grocers across the state on if and when they will carry the canned cocktails.

"We’re reviewing the permitting requirements that come with this but yes, we are interested in selling these products in our beer-wine cafes," said Dennis Curtin, Director of Public Relations for Weis Markets, Inc.

Wegmans says they will also sell the canned cocktails when they're available.

"We are excited to be able to offer these highly sought-after products to our PA customers," said Tracy Van Auker, Public Relations Manager for Wegmans. "Like all licensees in Pennsylvania, we are working with the state to determine when we can start offering ready-to-drink cocktails in our Pennsylvania stores.

"We're excited this bill was passed and we look forward to bringing ready-to-drink cocktails to our stores and customers in the very near future," said Ashley Flower, Manager for Public Relations at The GIANT Company.

"We are thrilled that Pennsylvania has passed legislation to allow grocery stores to sell ready to drink cocktails," said Dana Ward, Director of Communications & Public Affairs for ACME. "ACME is excited to soon offer these products in our stores to continue to provide our customers a one stop shopping experience."

abc27 has reached out to Giant Eagle, ALDI, Trader Joe's, and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for comment on the new law.
