(WHTM) -- Republicans are gathering in Milwaukee just days after a gunman in Pennsylvania tried to kill their standardbearer, a bit of emotional whiplash would be understandable for the GOP, and a bit of reflection for the entire nation might be in order.

"It was a tough day a tragic day," Congressman Dan Meuser said at the Republican convention Monday afternoon. He was just feet away from Donald Trump Saturday afternoon. "President Trump is gonna lead the way for our government."

Donald Trump had blood on his face, but is there blood on the hands of the intense partisans in both parties who stoke the fires of divisiveness, bitterness and venom? There seems to be bipartisan agreement on that.

"All leaders need to take down the temperature and rise above the hateful rhetoric that exists and search for a better, brighter future for this nation," Governor Josh Shapiro said.

"I hope everyone will think before they spout off things, especially at a really sensitive time like this moment right now," Senator Josh Martin (R - Lancaster) said. "That there's people out there who are watching this who don't maybe have the ability to control their actions, who are easily triggered by things that other people say."

Republican State Rep Mike Jones (R - York) was triggered by a social media post shortly after the shooting.

"We had a senior Democrat staff member from the Southeast Post on Facebook, 'A For effort. A for effort,'" Jones said.

Jones expressed his outrage to House democratic leadership insisting the staffer be fired. We have confirmed they were.

"But for somebody in that position to put something like that in a public forum, unapologetically, I just found it inexcusable for a staff member," Jones said.

What happened Saturday was inexcusable, and begs the question in this political climate what will happen next?

"It's terrifying,"  Senate President Pro Tem Kim Ward (R) said. "You know, I think about this election and the safety of everybody after a someone a police officer said to me, when we at the Capitol, when it's time to certify the election, we're going to need a lot of extra protection up there because it's crazy from all over the country. Crazy. It's a it's a sad time in our history. Very, very sad."

But an exciting week for Republicans like Mike Jones anxious to see trump up close and personal, and despite a PA gunman's efforts, alive and well.

"It's just electric," Jones said. "When he when he takes the stage, the moments leading up to him coming out, those first few minutes, he's playing that proud to be an American. And it's just you just feel so incredibly patriotic."
