HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -- Shortly after former President Donald Trump was whisked off a western Pennsylvania stage by Secret Service, Governor Josh Shapiro called such violence unacceptable.
"Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable," Shapiro said in a statement on X. "It has no place in Pennsylvania or the United States."
He said he'd been briefed on the situation.
State troopers are working with federal and local partners, he said.
"Lori and I are praying for President Trump, the Secret Service officers who protected him, those attending the event, and all of the first responders still on the scene," Shapiro added.
Trump was hosting a rally Butler when apparent gunshots rang out.
U.S. Senator Bob Casey said he is also monitoring the situation.
"Political violence is never acceptable and I am hoping former president Trump & all attendees are safe," Casey wrote on X.
Senate Candidate Dave McCormick was at the rally and is safe, his campaign said.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry said she was "deeply disturbed by this act of violence that has absolutely no place in the Commonwealth or anywhere."
"My regards are with the families who will be forever impacted by this heinous act," Henry said in a statement. "I am hopeful for a speedy recovery for former President Trump."
U.S. Senator John Fetterman said he was "appalled."
"I condemn in the strongest terms this violence in Butler," Fetterman said.
