Cucumber recall: 27 sick in Pennsylvania after Salmonella outbreak

(WHTM) - At least 27 people in Pennsylvania have become sick amid an outbreak of Salmonella tied to recalled cucumbers, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Nationally, there have been 162 illnesses and 54 hospitalizations in 25 states tied to the Salmonella outbreak connected to Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. in Delray Florida. The number of people in Pennsylvania who became sick is the highest in the nation.

The cucumbers were sold in bulk to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors in 14 states between May 17 and 21. Illnesses were reported between May 11 and 16 with no deaths connected to the recall reported.

Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia were all named in the CDC's investigation.

The recall does not include English cucumbers or mini cucumbers, and any cucumbers affected by the recall should no longer be in stores. If you recently purchased cucumbers, you can check with the retailer to see if they're connected to the recall.

Symptoms of ingesting produce with Salmonella include diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F, diarrhea for more than three days that is not improving, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and signs of dehydration.
