CHESTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) -- A Pennsylvania couple is facing murder charges in a death investigation of an eight-year-old.

Holly Back, 40, and Mousa Hawa, 41, both of Coatesville, face third degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and other related charges, the Chester County District Attorney said in a news release. Hawa is the child's biological father.

“Parents have a sacred responsibility to care for their children," District Attorney Christopher L. de Barrena-Sarobe said in a statement. "Day after day, these Defendants prioritized easy access to drugs over the health and safety of their child, leaving deadly fentanyl within arm’s reach. It is inexcusable. And it is murder.”

Blood and urine samples from the child showed there was cocaine and fentanyl in their system, the DA says.

Police were called to the 500 block of East Lincoln Highway on July 26, just after 2:30 a.m., for a reported child in cardiac arrest.

After arriving, officers found the child, saw Hawa giving them CPR and took over the life-saving measures. The child had ashen skin along with cyanosis to his mouth and ears.

The child was rushed to the hospital where the child died upon arriving around 3:30 p.m., the release states.

Police saw multiple bags scattered throughout the living room, including one that had multiple medication bottles in it. Investigators discovered empty heroin bags in the room where police found the child, along with "hundreds" of small bags that had blue fentanyl/heroin bags with drug residue in them, according to the DA.

Text messages discussing drug use was found on the duo's cell phones. The DA says Hawa also told investigators they told the child the drugs were "medicine" and that the child knew not to touch the drugs unless it was given to them.

Back was arraigned Monday and lodged in Chester County Prison in $1 million bail and Hawa is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 12.
