CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) – There are many resources out there for anyone suffering from mental health issues, but some experts say more need to be available – especially with regards to children.

Marisa Vicere, president and founder of the Jana Marie Foundation, said that mental health in youth is often a topic people are silent on. That stigma can lead to kids feeling alone.

"That just makes it hard to carry out those daily activities or engage in those satisfying relationships," Vicere said.

Former Policy Director for Senator Ted Kennedy, Constance "Connie" Garner, feels that the system in place is not unsalvageable, but it does need some work.

"It's not pulling apart what we have," Garner said. "It's really about taking what we have and seeing where are the places that we need to make it stronger."

Garner says that "kids need to feel heard" and "talk directly" about their experiences because the more they talk, the easier it will become.

The Jana Marie Foundation also believes that adults hold responsibility for the mental well-being of children and that modeling "healthy behaviors" can go a long way.

"We know that self-care is really important, so setting boundaries around our time, making sure that we're making connections with our friends, our family," Vicere said.

For anyone suffering from a mental health crisis, call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline to speak with a professional.
