HUNTINGDON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A historic clock in Huntingdon County has been restored and now it's being used for something more than just telling time.

The ticking of the clock mechanism hasn't been heard since 1958. It's a moment that community members are saying is better late than never. The Huntingdon Presbyterian Church on Mifflin Street holds the historic clock and it's been there since 1911.

In the 1950's officials decided to make the clock electric and from then on some of the pieces were no longer being used. The digital clock ran until 2016.

"We didn't know if it could ever be restored again," Thomas Yoder, the mayor of the Huntingdon Borough said.

In 2023, the county commissioners approved a grant of over $280,000 to help repair the town timepiece to its original state.

Balzer Family Clock Works, a company from Maine that specializes in clock tower manufacturing and restoration, had to take out the dials at the top of the tower including the hands and glass panes and top piece of the clock’s mechanism.

All the pieces had to be taken to their shop in Maine to be remade by hand. With the clock now running again town commissioners hope that it will be an important attraction to residents.

"The deal that anybody in Huntington, anybody in the county will be able to come into the base of the tower here and see this clock in action," Lawrence Biemiller, a member of the Huntingdon County Planning Commission said.

They added that around 90% of the clock to be replaced.

"You're going to be able to see this clock work in a way that you never could when it was three stories up into the tower," Biemiller added.

"So this will be just one more stop on the trail for them to see this beautiful clock working in action," Yoder said.

With the clock back in action it seems as though the community is excited to get a peak at what's inside.

"People in the community just keep asking, when can we see it? When's it going to be done?" Yoder added.
