Sobering statistics have been released about the local opioid epidemic by the Overdose Information Network compiled by the Center of Rural Pennsylvania.

According to Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook, there were 116 drug-related deaths last year, which is one more than the previous year.

The average age of overdose victims in Erie County was between 40 and 50.

Cook said more than 90% of overdoses involved fentanyl added to methamphetamine or cocaine, which could be due to the source of the drugs according to Dr. Philip Moore, the medical director of Gaudenzia Treatment and Recovery Services.

“In Erie County, the drugs can also be coming from places like Detroit. Maybe this is a reflection of higher potency fentanyl hitting the opioid drug supply," said Dr. Moore.

According to Cook, there have been 27 confirmed doses in Erie County already this year. He suspects that number will increase when toxicology results are completed.
