HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - FirstEnergy Pennsylvania's proposed rate hike is now facing scrutiny from state regulators.
The Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission (PUC) voted unanimously to suspend and investigate the proposed rate hike.
First proposed on April 2, FirstEnergy says it would draw in an additional $500 Million in revenue from its Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power, and West Penn Power subsidiaries.
The proposed increases, if approved, would increase users’ bills by $16.61 to $21.30 per month on average for those using 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month. The company says it is the first increase they've requested since 2016.
They were set to take effect June 1, and are now suspended for up to seven months from that date as an administrative law judge investigates.
A final PUC decision on the FirstEnergy rate increase request is due by Jan. 1, 2025.
